Last Wednesday, the University of Victoria’s Business Sustainability Club partnered with Synergy, a local environmental consulting firm, to host another successful Carrotmob. Starting from 11:30AM, The Sauce served delicious lunches and carrot-themed cocktails. At 4:00PM, The Zone at 91.3FM hosted a live broadcast, which was followed by entertainment from local performers Chelsea-Lyne Heins, Claire Butterfield, Michael Hamilton, Amy Wood, and Maryse Bernard!

A Carrot Eating a Carrot = Sustainable!

In one action-packed day, eco-consumers (including students and faculty, professionals, and members of the local community) mobbed The Sauce and raised over $9,000 – the most successful customer-sourced revenue of any Carrotmob in Canada! The Sauce will invest 100% of the revenue in more environmentally-friendly upgrades!

Synergy will help The Sauce reduce its overall energy consumption by 20% through lighting and equipment upgrades, as well as an insulation assessment. All this exciting progress toward a more environmentally-sustainable facility was made possible by everyone who came to support this great initiative!

The Sauce Restaurant uses locally-sourced ingredients on Vancouver Island to create high end cuisine. The Sauce pledges to contribute 100% of profits from the Carrotmob toward making its company more environmentally friendly! Help us celebrate and support its sustainable business initiatives!

Fernwood Inn Update

March, 2011 saw Victoria put on the second most money making Carrotmob ever! It was a task that involved many people, including the core group of UVic Business students that we could not have pulled it off without; thanks to everyone once again!

Now two months on and you may be interested in what the Fernwood Inn has been doing to ‘green’ itself and join the growing sustainable business community in Victoria. Well in one way, it is doing a ton, while at the same time holding off on doing anything. Mike, the owner, has been working with Jill Doucette to plan out the most effective changes the heritage building can make to help it achieve its green goals. The two large projects which Mike really wants to do are fixing the poor, ineffective insulation of the building and installing a new and improved heating and air circulation system to help cut down on the usage. So far, they have received quotes for the two changes, both around the twenty thousand dollar mark. These projects have currently been put on hold however, as the focus is now on BC Hyrdo’s Energy Fix contest.

The Fernwood Inn has been quickly working its way through the BC Hyrdo Energy Fix contest and now sits as one of the THREE FINALISTS! Winning this would mean another $35,000 for Mike and hi sister Sarah to use while making all the necessary changes to their business. We are very certain that we can help the Inn win this competition and feed the money bank for the green initiatives needed to be done. At this time, until June 3rd, we are asking everyone to take 10 seconds out of their day (EVERYDAY) to go to the link bellow and vote for the Fernwood Inn. You may vote once a day from any different IP address, so this means your laptop, desktop, smart phone, and other devices with internet connection. The more votes, the better the chance the Fernwood Inn will win, and the better we can support one of our local businesses in their green goals.

Check back for more updates as the contest progresses and through the next few months as Fernwood sees it’s community pub/restaurant take on BC!

Until next time…!

LARGEST Carrotmob in North America ever!

Well, the party is over but people can’t stop talking about event that took Fernwood by storm last week. Thats right, it was the Victoria Carrotmob Kickoff Party! The evening was a huge success with nearly 400 people coming out to eat, drink and be merry! The Fernwood Inn surprised us all the day of the event by pledging to match every dollar spent that day to put towards sustainable initiatives. All in all, $8,068.63 was spent on some delicious food and bevy’s which means with The Fernwood Inn’s admirable pledge, we made $16,137.26 in total! According to Carrotmob headquesters, this is the largest Carrotmob EVER in North America and the second largest in the world (just behind an event in Bangkok which raised $20,000 USD). It’s events such as this that put Victoria on the world-wide sustainability map and they aren’t possible without you! Thank you to everyone who came out to show your support!

Victoria’s next Carrotmob is well on it’s way. Your imput is needed to determine which store or restauraunt Victorians want to see go green! We will have more details on how you can vote for a business and the details of the event that is set to take place mid-May
very soon!
